Omar dreams of becoming a well-known soccer player, one who travels the world.
He trains for that dream every week at HEAL Palestine’s Amputee Football Academy, alongside Obeida, where they come to play, learn, and dream.
The academy exists for children who have lost limbs in Gaza, a number that has grown beyond anything a health system could absorb. For many of these boys, the injury arrived alongside the loss of a home, a school, and in some cases a family. What follows is usually treated as a medical story: surgeries, fittings, rehabilitation. What gets left out is everything a child loses that a hospital cannot return.
The field returns some of it. Learning to move again on crutches or a prosthetic, at speed, with a ball, rebuilds strength and coordination in a way no clinic session does. Being on a team puts a child back among peers who understand exactly what their body has been through, where an amputation is not the thing that makes them different. Competing gives them something to be good at again.
