From Amputee Child to Program Leader: Muath’s Journey of Healing and Leadership

Ten years ago, Muath was a child in the Gaza Strip who had just lost his limb. Like thousands of children in Gaza, he faced not only the physical trauma of amputation but also the uncertainty of what his future would look like. At the time, access to specialized care was extremely limited.
Through the efforts of Steve Sosebee, co-founder and executive director of HEAL Palestine, Muath was able to travel to the United States to receive the medical treatment he needed. That journey changed the course of his life.
Today, a decade later, Muath has returned home not as a patient, but as a leader. He is now part of the staff at HEAL Palestine, where he plays a key role in the Amputee Program. His work centers on supporting child amputees and helping them grow into confident, capable individuals who can one day lead and uplift others.
From Receiving Care to Leading Change
Muath’s story is a powerful example of what long-term, people-centered care can achieve. As a child, he was the one in need of support, navigating pain, recovery, and adaptation in an unfamiliar environment far from home. Today, he stands on the other side of that journey.
In his role, Muath works directly with children who are facing limb loss, offering not only guidance but lived understanding. He knows what it means to start over, to learn how to move again, and to rebuild confidence step by step. That perspective allows him to connect with children in a way that goes far beyond clinical care.
More importantly, he represents something essential. He shows that an amputee child is not defined by loss, but by potential. With the right support, that child can grow into someone who leads, mentors, and builds pathways for others.
A Growing Crisis in Gaza
The urgency of this work continues to grow. The United Nations has confirmed that Gaza now has the highest number of child amputees per capita in the world. Behind this reality are thousands of children who need prosthetics, rehabilitation, mental health support, and long-term care.
These needs cannot be met by short-term solutions alone. They require sustained programs rooted in the community.
Building Leaders, Not Just Providing Care
The HEAL Palestine Amputee Program is designed with that vision in mind. It goes beyond immediate medical intervention to focus on long-term recovery, empowerment, and leadership.
Muath embodies that mission. He is not only supporting children through their recovery, but also helping them see themselves differently. As future leaders, as active members of their communities, and as individuals with strength and purpose.
His journey has come full circle. The child who once left Gaza in search of healing is now helping build a system of care that ensures others do not walk that path alone.
Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month
During Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, Muath’s story stands as a reminder of what is possible when care is sustained and rooted in community.
Supporting the HEAL Palestine Amputee Program means investing in more than recovery. It means investing in a future where amputee children are empowered to lead, to support one another, and to shape the world around them.
