HEAL Palestine Drills Clean Water Wells Serving 700 Families Each in North Gaza Camps

Gaza’s water crisis is severe. Damaged infrastructure and contaminated groundwater have left families in displacement camps with little to no access to safe water.

HEAL Palestine is drilling clean water wells in Al-Shati, Al-Zarqa, and Jabalia Al-Nazla camps. Each well provides up to 700 families with daily access to clean water.

The scale of the problem is difficult to overstate. Gaza’s water network was already strained before the war, drawing on an aquifer long compromised by over-extraction and seawater intrusion. The destruction of pumping stations, pipes, and desalination capacity has pushed what remained past the point of function. In the camps, families queue for hours for water that may not be safe, ration what they collect across drinking, cooking, and washing, and often pay for supplies they cannot afford.

The consequences run straight into the clinics. Waterborne illness, skin infections, and diarrheal disease spread quickly in crowded camps, and they hit children hardest. Treating those cases without addressing the water they come from is a cycle with no end to it.

A well changes that equation at the source. It shortens the distance families walk, removes the cost, and gives a camp a reliable supply rather than a dependence on deliveries that may or may not arrive.

Across the three camps, these wells serve thousands of families every day. This work is part of HEAL Palestine’s commitment to addressing the conditions underlying Gaza’s health crisis, not only its symptoms.
